There are certain patient cases that never leave you as a nurse. They are the experiences that hold – and shape – the indescribable art of nursing as you learn how to read significant cues, listen to the unspoken, and hold another’s heart while also holding your own as it comes undone.
American Journal of Nursing included my article, “Intimate Strangers,” as part of a special Nurses Week 2019 collection of some of their editors’ favorite articles over the year. This article describes one of those cases. I can still picture so many details from that day. I can still hear the mother’s singing, hear her pleas. I still remember how I fell into a colleague’s arms after I left the room.
You can find the collection and the link to “Intimate Strangers” (free all of May) here:
I tried to read the article through the link, and it was listed “buy.” Sorry. I really wanted to read it. You’re a great nurse and writer!
